I work with leaders in organizations, helping them take their leadership practice to the next level.
As a coach, I provide candid straight talk about their performance and impact on the organization, and help them develop strategies to leverage their strengths and address their liabilities. I build rapport quickly, create an environment of trust and safety, and focus on specific actions they can take to achieve better results. I’m told I’m someone who offers great stuff without fluff. I rather like that!
I often work with leaders one-on-one in person, or even by telephone. I’m based in San Diego, California.
I also work with leaders and their teams. My team building is characterized as being on-point (as contrasted with other, more esoteric team building methodologies, which are often far removed from the real world.) The focus is on process - how the team is operating. What are they doing well? What could they do better? How do we get from here to there? More often than not, my team buildings begin with interviews with each member of the team (including the leader) and the data that’s collected drives the design of the workshop.
And, I work with groups of leaders in seminar settings. I’ve designed and delivered dozens of leadership academies for leaders at all levels of organizations: directors, managers, or supervisors. I’ve taught leadership / management skills to a wide variety of professionals, from attorneys to physicians, from research scientists to engineers, in both the public and private sector.
Recently, I published a book with my colleague Eric Klein on leadership and decision making. To Do or Not To Do: How Successful Leaders Make Better Decisions is available from Wisdom Heart Press or on amazon.com. It’s a great little book, endorsed by gurus like Marshall Goldsmith and Ken Blanchard - and you can read it in an hour - packed with dozens of effective and proven techniques to make better decisions and involve your team more wisely.
Currently, I seem to be doing a lot of work with leaders in three areas:
- Decision making, of course
- How to have a difficult conversation
- How to make a successful transition when you’ve just been put in charge of a new team
I love my work. Leaders make all the difference in the world, and working with leaders is my way of making a difference.
